Q&A TEXINTEL TALKS WITH DESIGNER KATE CLEDWYN OF KC DESIGN

Today we talk to Designer and Photographer Kate Cledwyn, a talented artisan and self-confessed Interior addict. Her work enthuses style, a love of texture and a deep connection to nature. Steeped in Luxury, her Velvet fabrics are delicious!…

WE ASKED KATE TO SHARE HER CREATIVE INSPIRATION AND MUCH MORE, LET’S BEGIn…

TELL US WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CREATIVE CAREER?

I have always been creative, right from a young girl.  One summer holiday, when I was about six I was left at home with my Grandmother because I had chickenpox while the rest of the family went away to Sand Banks for a fortnights holiday and I remember having a printing set and being obsessed by it. I enjoyed lego and casting plaster figures using rubber moulds.  At school, I was the only girl to do metalwork classes - unusual and not widely encouraged then.

Later in life, I rebuilt my first house, an almost derelict flint cottage in Hampshire,  my ‘dream home’ nestled in a green valley without another house in sight. I thrived in the vision I had for this place and so immersed myself in its renovation redesigning rooms, knocking down walls, painting & decorating and experimenting with different paint effects and finishes. I liked to pull in colours from the fields and woods around the property and echo their colours in the paint colours of my walls which gave it a relaxed feel of belonging. I built sheds and laid patios and enjoyed huge satisfaction in creating my own vision. Living now in London I get a great thrill seeing properties improved on, tidied up, repainted and updated, maybe I just like order...

WHAT / WHO  INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

Sculptor Andrew Goldsworthy inspires me the most. I love that he uses nature in such a sympathetic way and I admire his patience and determination to create beautiful things that sometimes only last moments.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BRAND AND STUNNING DESIGNS.

My Brand is KCDesign.london.  It has evolved from my love and visual perspective of the world around me.  With my camera, I capture moments that fascinate me, incidental shapes and colours that are conjured up by light and movement.  I trap these ephemeral images and create patterns which I print onto luxurious velvet fabric, wallpapers and wall art.

ARE ALL YOUR PRODUCTS DIGITALLY PRINTED? AND WHY?

Yes, my products are digitally printed. Since my work originates from photography,  especially in nature, digital printing enables me to more accurately reproduce the huge range and depth of colour, giving my wallpapers and fabrics an added dimension and warmth.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT SO FAR?

My most favourite projects are always my latest and I have just recently had an Egg Chair covered in my Silver Roads Velvet fabric - I love its quirkiness, it’s strength, it makes a statement, and to me, it encapsulates everything I want my brand to be.

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER A NEW DESIGNER?

Believe in what you do, be different and perceiver.

WHERE CAN OUR READERS PURCHASE YOUR PRODUCTS?

My products are available through my website KCDESIGN.LONDON, Houzz and Vinterior.

KATE ALSO OFFERS BESPOKE WORK FOR SPECIFIC RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL PROJECTS.
