Sublime September

We would first and foremost like to thank everyone who visited us during the Hampshire Open Studios event. It really helps to make it a wonderful event for all. It is so appreciated to know that your support is there.

For September, we would like to share the design called Cactus Bark and reveal how it evolved.

Original photos: the Galapagos prickly pear tree

Story of the Galapagos prickly pear tree

A large tree cactus endemic to the Galapagos Islands. Over many decades, the lower pads of the cactus thicken and develop a hard, fibrous, reddish-brown bark layer to support the immense weight above. These cacti evolved a tall, tree-like structure as a defence mechanism. On islands populated by giant tortoises and land iguanas, the plants grow tall to keep their fleshy pads and fruits safely out of reach of hungry herbivores.
